Women on Fire at the 47th WNCAA Opening by Shauneil Omillo and Sarrah Costan

Another exciting league kicked off last September 3, 2016 at the Makati Coliseum as the 47th season of the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) began with the theme “Women on Fire: A Legacy of Passion.”

The performance was surely a bright way to kick off event.

This season’s host school, St. Jude Catholic School, lined up a colorful production that highlighted Filipino-Chinese culture for the opening ceremony. It was shown through the performances of traditional Chinese fire and dragon dances.

Guest speakers were volleyball star Alyssa Valdez as well as former University of Asia and the Pacific senior basketball team captain, who is now part of the technical committee of the Philippine Basketball Association’s women’s league, Roscelle Teotico. Alyssa shared three important things an athlete should remember: hardwork and discipline, passion for the sport, and having the right attitude. Roscelle also shared her top three, putting emphasis on hard work. She also said that a student-athlete should work on her patience, and that she has to do what she has to do “day in and day out.” Her last reminder was that a student-athlete should never forget to be grateful to her peers, teammates, family, and friends. Both speakers kicked off the opening with such inspiring messages.
