Squadra Finishes 12th, Secures Spot in Ego Supreme Crew Wars 4 Nationals

Words by Justine Jenika Tomas

The UA&P Squadra Dance Varsity achieved another milestone as they secured a spot in the Ego Supreme Crew Wars 4 Nationals – the biggest all-boys dance competition in the Philippines. With a score of 64.87, the team placed 12th out of 26 teams in the College Division – Luzon Elimination held last Sunday, October 22, 2017, at the Market! Market! Activity Center.

Competition was extremely intense and grueling for our dragons since they went against more experienced teams. Among the 26 contenders were renowned college-based dance crews La Salle Dance Company-Street (LSDC) from De La Salle University and Armada from University of the East-Caloocan. Armada was hailed the winners of Ego Supreme Crew Wars 2 in 2015, while LSDC claimed the championship title in the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 Street Dance Competition. The teams were third and second place respectively in this year’s Ego Supreme Crew Wars. First place was awarded to Cavite State University-Main Campus’ Prime Moverz who finished strong with a score of 77.95

Despite being first-timers in the competition, Squadra managed to place among the top 12 teams that will proceed to nationals later this year.

Squadra’s all-boy cast, fondly called the ‘egoiz’ (Ego boys) by their other teammates, featured 4 rookies and 7 seasoned members. They performed a two and a half minute piece choreographed by head coach JJ San Juan, assistant coach Macky Garcia, and team alumnus Joeve Mahinay. Their piece included stunts and dance styles such as new skool, power, and dance hall. These not only showcased all 11 members’ prowess in dancing but also highlighted their masculinity.

The team left the competition generally feeling happy and eager for more. They are proud that they were able to secure a place in the nationals of a large dance competition. This is no trivial feat considering that Squadra competed against more accomplished dance crews. They also competed with 25 other campus-based dance crews who have been competing in Ego Supreme Crew Wars since its first year. However, there was disappointment at the thought of the gap between Squadra and first placer Prime Moverz’s score – a whooping 13.08 points.

Nonetheless, the boys are proud of what they have achieved in the name of the university. Any negative thoughts that they had after the competition quickly turned into their inspiration to train twice as hard. Now the boys are hungrier than ever for the championship title and are looking forward to setting the Araneta Coliseum stage on fire this December. Their eyes are locked on the throne and their hearts are set to prove to the whole country that UA&P’s dance varsity is among the best of the best. The members also hinted that next year the girls of Squadra might finally join Crissa Dance Synergy, the female equivalent of Ego Supreme Crew Wars.

Ego Supreme Crew Wars 4 Nationals will be held on December 16, 2017 at the Araneta Coliseum.
