Squadra brought home the silver medal from the National Dance Championship (NDC) NCR Qualifiers held last January 28 in the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.
Our dragons competed in the College Co-ed Hip Hop Division, where they faced University of Sto. Tomas’ PRIME and Quezon City Polytechnic University’s Diversity Dance Crew for the top spot. The two other dance crews finished in first and third place, respectively.
Diversity Dance Crew wowed the crowd with their Suicide Squad themed piece. They incorporated songs from the movie’s official soundtrack and dressed up as characters from the film. The dance crew garnered an average score of 213, earning them the third place in the competition.
What set Squadra apart from the other competitors was the unison of different personalities into one piece. Each dancer allowed their individualities to shine through, much like their shiny gold and black Sukajan jackets. The effect was a beautiful coordination of passion and power coming from all fifteen members. Truly, our dragons embodied the spirit of UNITAS on the dance floor that afternoon. They finished with a score of 244.5 and landed in second place.
In the end, the tigers of PRIME brought home the gold medal to their university. No doubt it was the dance crew’s technique and group execution that captured the judges’ attention. Not only that, all of its dancers connected to the crowd with their exuding confidence, powerful movements, and on point facial expressions. We cannot forget that their entire piece was so put together. UST’s PRIME landed on the top place with a remarkable score of 266.5, which is a huge gap from the scores of the other dance crews.
Regardless of their place, all three dance crews will proceed to the NDC Finals as the representatives for NCR. The Finals will be held on March 10, 2017 in the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
