In UA&P, the school spirit ignites in every member of the University when they get to support its different athletic varsity teams. From attire color to the Drumline’s loud beats, it’s no wonder everyone is filled with excitement and pride. One of which is the Men’s Futsal Varsity Team, wherein they’re determined to succeed in this year’s Intercollegiate Futsal Tournament.

Now on it’s third year, this year’s UA&P Intercollegiate Futsal Tournament began last September 30, 2017, at the Parking and Sports Building (PSB). Organized by the Physical Education Department of the University, the futsal tournament features different colleges and universities battling out to compete for the championship in this sport. For this year, it now features 3 official tournaments: the Women’s Open, the Intercollegiate Men’s Tournament, and the new Junior High School Division Tournament.

The opening ceremony was spearheaded by former Futsal Varsity member, Theodore Viray (BSBA) and Mr. Joel Parcon. They formally welcomed all the participating teams of the 3 tournaments. It was followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem sang by members of the UA&P Chorale. Fr. Antonio Bermejo lead the prayer while Dr. Bernardo Villegas, UA&P co-founder and an avid fan of the sport himself, lead the opening remarks and the ceremonial kick-off. Patterned to what he said in his opening remarks last year, he explains that athletes in the world of futsal and football like Messi, Neymar, and Ronaldo are seen in our own Varsity Team and hopes that one of them will follow their footsteps soon. He mentions that in relation to the Golden Jubilee, the players must set an example to all the other aspiring athletes to succeed in their lives as well as handling their academics.

Just like last year, the intercollegiate men’s division is divided into two brackets. Bracket A comprises of Enderun Colleges’ Team A, Philippine Women’s University, UA&P Men’s Futsal Varsity Team B, and Rizal Technological University. Initially, Centro Escolar University was listed as part of this bracket but withdrew from the tournament at the last minute. On the other hand, Bracket B comprises of UA&P Men’s Futsal Varsity Team A, Everest Academy, Enderun Colleges’ Team B, University of Makati, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran. The women’s open division is composed of Enderun Colleges, Zes Futsal Club, Team One and the UA&P Women’s Futsal Varsity Team. For the Junior High School division, only the team from Everest Academy applied.

The competition rules were slightly updated this year, since the top 4 teams per bracket will compete against one another in the quarter-finals. The winners from all 4 matches in the quarterfinals will compete against each other in the semi-final (ICQ 1 vs ICQ 4 and ICQ 2 vs ICQ 3) to earn the 2 coveted spots in the final and the same rules apply for the finals. The games will happen every Saturday at PSB starting at 8:00am. The tournament will end on November 11, 2017 with the winners earning a trophy, medals, and the honor of becoming the third champion of the tournament.
